Types of Single Phase AC Air Conditioner Motors

Several types of single phase AC air conditioning motors are available. Each has its own characteristics and limitations.The simplest motor type is the single phase motor with coil winding. This type requires a starting mechanism. It can be either an electronic relay or a centrifugal switch.

Another type of single phase AC air conditioning motor is the split phase motor. It has an external capacitor connected in series with the START winding. The capacitor makes the circuit more efficient. The capacitor is active when the motor is switched on. In addition to correcting the power factor of the circuit, the capacitor helps provide additional torque during startup.

A third type of single phase AC air conditioning motor is a shaded pole motor. This type uses a single main winding and a shading coil to produce a moving magnetic field. The phase angle between the main winding and the shading coil is small. This type of motor is often used in devices that require a low starting torque. This type of motor is often used in small fan motors.

Some of the most common single phase AC air conditioning motors are the split phase induction motor and the shaded pole motor. These types of motors are typically used in major appliances like clothes dryers and air conditioners.

A centrifugal switch is often used to disconnect the START winding from the circuit when the motor is switched off. This protects the START winding from overheating. The switch usually opens when the rotor has reached about 75% of its rated speed.

The shaded pole motor is another low-cost single phase AC motor. This type of motor uses a single main winding and consists of a copper ring to produce an opposing field to the main winding. It is most often used in small fan motors.

Several synchronous motor designs utilize a squirrel-cage structure to bring the rotor close to synchronous speed. These designs are often found in light industrial AC motors. The squirrel-cage structure brings the rotor near synchronous speed and provides the low level rotating magnetic field necessary to turn the rotor and the attached load.
